The Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) will host the island’s annual international pro surfing contest, the Makka Pro, from July 20 - 22, 2012. The event will take place at Makka Surfing Beach in Southaven, Yallahs, St. Thomas, Jamaica. As the largest surfing competition in the Englishspeaking Caribbean, the Makka Pro is expected to attract thousands of visitors to witness surfing pros as they compete for the Paul Blades Memorial Trophy. Sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board, the two-day event will showcase Jamaica’s eastern shore and its ideal surfing conditions. Some of the contestants for this year’s championship include the defending Makka Pro Champ Jensen Calloway and his fellow Floridian surfer Jesse Heilman, runner-up Jeremy Johnson, and Australia’s Chris Duff. Last year, Imani Wilmot became the first Jamaican to win in the female category of the Makka Pro. Makka Pro is the final event in the West Atlantic Pro Surf Series, following events in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The hometown favorite is Jamaica’s Icah Wilmot, who is in 3rd place behind Bruce Mackie and Josh Bourke, coming into the competition in Jamaica. The competitions will be streamed live by Dekal
Wireless.
